Seamount Mineral Deposits:A Source of Rare Metals for High-Technology Industries
Seamount Mineral Deposits Rare Metals High-Technology Industries
2015/7/7
The near exponential growth in Earth's population and the global economy puts increasing constraints on our planet's finite supply of natural metal resources, and, consequently, there is an increasing...

Carbonate mineral saturation states the U.S. East Coast
2014/4/17
To assess the impact of ocean acidification on the carbonate chemistry of the shelf waters off the southeastern
United States (South Atlantic Bight [SAB]), we measured carbonate mineral saturation st...
Developing the Mineral Resources of the Seabed
Mineral Resources Seabed economic well-being
2008/12/17
The world’s oceans have played a vital role in the development of
virtually every nation. They provide the transportation network that
binds us together through trade; they yield much of the food th...
Valuable mineral resources are widely distributed throughout the seabed. autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are preferable to remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) when probing for such mineral resources as the extensive exploration area makes it difficult to maintain contact with operators. AUVs depend on batteries, so their power consumption should be reduced to extend exploration time. Power for conventional marine instrument systems is incorporated in their waterproof sealing. External intermittent control of this power source until termination of exploration is challenging due to limitations imposed by the underwater environment. Thus, the AUV must have a power control system that can improve performance and maximize use of battery capacity. The authors developed such a power control system with a three-step algorithm. It automatically detects underwater operational states and can limit power, effectively decreasing power consumption by about 15%.

Demand for high-speed marine vehicles (HSMVs) is high among both commercial and naval users. It is the duty of the marine vessel’s designer to provide a hull and propulsion system that diminishes drag...

Variations in the optical properties of terrigenous mineral-rich particulate matter suspended in seawater
Variations in the optical properties terrigenous mineral-rich particulate matter suspended in seawater
2014/4/21
From laboratory measurements, we determined the spectral mass-specific absorption, ap*(λ), and scattering, bp*(λ, coefficients for terrigenous mineral-rich particulate assemblages suspended in seawate...
Generation of Seafloor Hydrothermal Vent Fluids and Associated Mineral Deposits
The high seas the liquid and the heat flow water ocean crust Marine chemistry
2015/7/22
In the nearly 30 years since the discovery of hydrothermal venting along open-ocean spreading centers, much has been learned about the generation of vent fluids and associated deposits. The hot, reduc...
Mineral grains in caddisfly pupal cases and streambed sediments: Resource use and its limitation through conflicting resource requirements
Mineral grains caddisfly pupal cases streambed sediments conflicting resource requirements
2014/5/9
Sand and fine gravel in streambed sediments are considered to be an overabundant resource for caddisflies that build cases from it. However, larvae of Rhyacophila and Hydropsyche build pupal cases wit...
Variations in the mass-specific absorption coefficient of mineral particles suspended in water
Variations in the mass-specific absorption coefficient mineral particles suspended water
2014/5/14
We examined the light-absorption properties of various samples of mineral particles suspended in water, which included pure mineral species (quartz, calcite, illite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite) an...
Optical properties of Asian mineral dust suspended in seawater
Optical properties Asian mineral dust suspended in seawater
2014/5/14
The spectral optical properties of Asian mineral dust suspended in seawater exhibit significant variability associated with the origin (and, hence, the chemistry and mineralogy) and particle size dist...
