数字地形分析对于地貌学研究有着天然的联系和重要的支撑作用，但以数字地形分析自动识别复合地貌形态类型的方法研究至今还相当薄弱，这主要是由于数字地形分析目前所擅长计算的各种地形属性尚难以有效刻画复合地貌形态类型在真实世界中的复杂空间结构。
