森林火灾伤亡事故一直是中国林火扑救中的重要问题。目前对中国的森林火灾伤亡情况还缺乏系统的研究，分析森林火灾死亡事故的特征及影响因子有助于了解森林火灾中的伤亡情况，为改进林火扑救和疏散策略、减少森林火灾伤亡提供科学基础。
森林火学科组，以保护我国森林资源和生态环境及可持续发展为总目标，重点研究森林火灾防御技术和林火机理，推广和开发森林防火科技成果。现有博士研究生导师1人、硕士研究生导师1人，研究员1人，副研究员3人。自1995年以来承担了国家973基础研究、国家攻关、国家自然基金、北京市自然基金和林火实用技术开发等多项课题。获梁希林业科学技术一等奖1项（排名第1），梁希林业科学技术二等奖4项（均排名第1）。
