澳大利亚联邦科学与工业研究组织2020年8月21日发布公报说，一种由海藻制成的饲料添加剂能大幅减少牲畜排放的甲烷量，有助于应对气候变化。该组织当天宣布与多家机构合作成立一家公司，以在市场上推广这种由海门冬属海藻制成的饲料添加剂。据介绍，相关海藻能产生具有生物活性的化合物三溴甲烷，后者可在牲畜消化饲料过程中通过抑制一种特定肠道酶来减少生成甲烷。
