空间核反应堆可以提供一个高能量密度电源,具备不依赖太阳能工作运转的能力,并可以在诸如火星表面等极端恶劣环境下运转。美国研制的Kilopower反应堆可产生1-10千瓦的电力,并可连续使用十年之久。该反应堆原型动力系统使用固体、铸造铀-235反应堆堆芯。反应堆热量通过无源钠热管传递,热量通过高效斯特林发动机转化为电力。
